iPad Pro M5: Not just a new chip, but another change
Apple is not only bringing the brand new M5 chip to next professional iPad, which is due in fall. Selfie fans and videochatters will get a new component.

The next iPad Pro will apparently receive more hardware changes than previously assumed. Instead of just being equipped with the new M5 SoC, which has not yet been used by Apple, the camera equipment is also due to be upgraded. This was reported by Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman in his newsletter on Sunday (paywall). It currently looks like the device will be released in the fall, possibly in October.
Technically similar to the M4
The iPad Pro M5 follows on from the iPad Pro M4 presented in May 2024. Last year, Apple was the first to install a brand-new chip in the tablet series. This also appears to be the case with the M5, as Macs with the SoC are now expected next spring (which would mean a delay). Initially, the iPad Pro M5 will probably again be delivered in two variants, one with 11 and one with 13 inches.

The M5 is expected to speed up the tablet (slightly) – by how much exactly remains to be seen. According to Gurman, the camera change concerns the front or selfie image sensor. Apple had moved this to a different position on the iPad Pro M4, which uses a large OLED display for the first time. Instead of using the device in portrait mode for video chats, users now get a better picture in landscape mode.
Two cameras for both formats
The problem: unlocking in portrait format sometimes caused problems, and selfies and video chats in this format could also suffer. According to Gurman, Apple is now circumventing the difficulties by simply installing two cameras. One will remain in the position introduced with the iPad Pro M4 (for landscape format users), while another will be placed in the area suitable for portrait format. It remains unclear whether Apple will actually install two facial recognition modules (TrueDepth unit for Face ID) or leave it at a second normal camera sensor.
One of the problems was also that users sometimes covered the sensor when they held the device "incorrectly", even if the iPad then spit out an error message. Incidentally, the idea of duplicating iPad areas is not new: Apple had planned to install two dock connectors on the first iPad so that the device could be charged in both formats.
