Firefox 141 is here and brings an AI assistant for tab organization. The function builds on the tab groups introduced in version 138. Users can create them simply by dragging and dropping the desired tabs together and assigning a name. However, instead of having to add all pages manually as before, Firefox can now automatically suggest suitable tabs and add them to the group. If desired, the AI can also adapt the name based on the websites.

Mozilla emphasizes that only a local AI model is used for this feature. The data read – title and description of the open tabs – does not leave the user's device. This is not only for reasons of data protection, but is also faster, as the description of the function explains. If the user does not want to use the automatic AI suggestions for tab groups, they can deactivate them in the settings.

The vertical tab bar, introduced in version 136, can now be adjusted so that the tool area can be any size. This means that users can quickly reduce its size and the moved tools and extensions automatically move to the overflow menu. Another new feature is that the address bar can now be used as a converter: Firefox can directly convert units of length, temperatures, time zones and more here. The result is copied to the clipboard with a single click.

Under Linux, the web browser should now require less RAM and no longer requires a restart after an update via the package manager. WebGPU support is new for Windows, which should significantly accelerate graphics and machine learning calculations. macOS and Linux are set to receive WebGPU support in the coming months, with Android to follow. Technical details on WebGPU in Firefox can be found in a separate blog post.

For enterprise users, it is also important that the Pocket policies in FirefoxHome are available again for compatibility reasons. New policies use the word Stories instead of Pocket, but there are no plans to remove the previous Pocket policies. With the FirefoxHome guidelines, administrators can customize the start page of the web browser. Mozilla discontinued the Pocket service itself in May.

There are also many smaller updates and bug fixes, which are listed in the release notes. Firefox 141 is available immediately. However, the AI assistant for the tab groups is part of the progressive rollout, so users will receive it gradually.

The developers are also currently introducing a new website –. In future, firefox.com will serve as the central point of contact instead of mozilla.org, for example for downloading the browser. The new website currently includes a general feature description and a resources section with further information such as a blog and the release notes. Users can share any bugs with the developers in a dedicated bug report.
