Swiss company builds USB-C case for Lightning iPhones: unfortunately sold out
Ken Pillonel already had a viral hit years ago with a USB-C conversion for an iPhone. Now comes a real product.

Anyone who travels a lot knows the problem: almost all devices are now equipped with USB-C interfaces (including Apple's own hardware), but not iPhones older than generation 15. As a result, many users still carry around a Lightning-to-USB-C cable that is no longer really necessary. Swiss hobbyist Ken Pillonel has now tackled this problem and developed the first commercially produced iPhone case that turns a Lightning device into a USB-C device –, including data transfer, charging and CarPlay support.
A question of sustainability
Pillonel, who actually comes from the robotics sector, caused a stir in 2021 when he succeeded in converting an iPhone X to USB-C – His unique piece was then auctioned on eBay for high prices (well into five figures). He later also showed how AirPods Pro could be made more sustainable (because they can be repaired). According to him, the iPh0n3 USB-C Protection Case is his biggest project to date, for which he has also made significant advance payments (purchase of machines and more), as he explains in a YouTube video.

The specially founded company Obsoless has already sold out the first three "batches" of the new case –. The first models are not due to arrive until mid-September, even for those who still managed to place an order ("I agree to be patient"). However, the range of models for which the case will be available is large – and Pillonel's logistics are correspondingly complex. It is already starting with the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, and the 11, 12, 13, 14, SE 2 and SE 3 generations will also be covered as soon as the production orders have been fulfilled. Cases will also be available for "older" devices, although it initially remained unclear which ones.
Waiting for batch 4 and 5
The iPh0n3 USB-C Protection Case costs 50 Swiss francs and is a classic bumper case with a back. A lip on the front protects the display, while the glass (or aluminum) on the back is completely covered except for the camera area. The material is a "strong dark gray nylon 12", writes Pillonel. The USB-C port is located at the bottom right – and is vertical. As mentioned, CarPlay and data transfers to the computer plus fast charging are technically supported. Other accessories that require power from the iPhone (such as audio, screens or external storage media) do not work with the case, as these require Apple adapters.
Anyone interested in a fourth or fifth batch of the USB-C case can register by email. According to Pillonel, the most requested models will be produced with higher priority. Incidentally, the case also supports MagSafe for wireless charging –. The magnet is said to be even stronger than without the case.
