iCloud data: Mac app backs up Drive and Photos
If you don't really trust Apple's storage service, you can also back up your data manually. Parachute Backup specializes in this.

Apple's iCloud is generally regarded as a secure storage location. If you have purchased enough GBytes to TBytes as part of a + subscription, you can also store automatic backups of your iPhone or iPad there. In addition, iCloud serves as a storage location for an online hard disk, called iCloud Drive by Apple, which also stores the user's photo library with pictures and videos by default. However, sometimes cloud services don't work as well as they should, or you may lose data yourself. It can therefore be a good idea to create a backup of the iCloud content. A few weeks ago, Parachute Backup was released as a special tool for macOS computers.
Complete photo backup possible
The app from developer Eric Mann recognizes various data sources. The entire content contained in the Photos app can be downloaded to the Mac in full resolution, including edits, live photos, and shared albums, and backed up to external media if desired. There is also the option to work with incremental and scheduled backups.

Different folders can be selected for iCloud Drive. These include not only the online hard disk itself but also app folders such as those from iWork or Swift Playground. Likewise, it is useful that the desktop and document folders contained in iCloud can be restored, which can be swapped to iCloud if required if there is not enough internal SSD space.
Storage to other cloud services too
In addition to external hard disks and SSDs, Parachute Backup also uses an integrated NAS and alternative cloud services as a storage destination. This can be useful if you would rather not keep all your data in iCloud only. Dropbox, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive are currently supported. A “Smart Offloading” function is used to offload content back to iCloud to save storage space if necessary.
When using the app, it should be noted that other backup solutions, such as SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner can also back up iCloud data, but only if it is already available on the Mac, not directly from the cloud. The latter makes Parachute Backup special. With Offloader, developer Mann also has another tool on offer that should give you better control over when macOS moves content to iCloud. This should be faster with the tool than by default. The prices are civil: Parachute Backup costs 5.99 euros, Offloader 1.99 euros. Both tools come without a subscription model.
As Mike Bombich, developer of Carbon Copy Cloner, told Mac & i, his app can also download iCloud data for backup purposes. More details on how this works in practice are summarized in a support document. In addition to iCloud Drive, this is also possible for other cloud services that use Apple's FileProvider scheme.
