A good four and a half years after the launch of AirTags, Apple's very popular Bluetooth and ultra-wideband trackers, a second version is finally due for release. At least that's what the rumor mill thinks. It is conceivable that Apple will present the new devices together with new iPhone 17 models at the beginning of September. This is supported by the fact that major retailers have discounted the trackers significantly meanwhile. There are also code leaks in iOS 18.6 and other clues.

Amazon Germany as well as the electronics stores Saturn and MediaMarkt of the Ceconomy Group sold the four-pack of AirTags for 89 euros, or 22.25 euros each, until the weekend. The campaign has now expired and Ceconomy has reduced the price to 107.99 euros and Amazon to 94 euros. However, a simultaneous campaign by two such large retailers suggests a form of sale.

In fact, the bargain price is still available from individual smaller resellers, as the heise price comparison (starting from 87,84 €) shows. Apple's original price, on the other hand, is still 129 euros for the four-pack. The only advantage of buying from the manufacturer is that you get a free engraving, which makes it easier to distinguish the AirTags. Unfortunately, retailers do not offer this.

Back in June, a beta of iOS 18.6 revealed that Apple was planning new AirTags. The code included states that the operating system is already compatible with the as yet unreleased model. Commendable: Apple is apparently not planning to force users to upgrade to iOS 26 to be able to use the new trackers.

The AirTags 2 are expected to have a longer battery life with earlier alerts, increased connection stability to the “Where is?” network, including a second-generation UWB chip with precision search from 60  meters (instead of 15), as well as improvements in data protection and security. The latter is not necessarily a good thing for people who use the trackers as anti-theft protection. The devices are supposed to be “tamper-resistant,” i.e., recognize that the speaker has been deactivated, for example. Whether the AirTags 2 will be rechargeable or continue to use button cells is just as unclear as the planned price. It could be around 35 euros per unit.
