iPhone 17 price increase: Is it perhaps not a price increase at all?
A closer look at the iPhone 17 price rumors shows that Apple is killing an entry-level model, but could even reduce the price.

It is a foregone conclusion among observers that Apple will tweak the price and storage scheme of its new iPhone models. iPhone 17, 17 Air, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are to be partially equipped with more standard storage, but also with a price increase. However, at least one of them – turns out to be a hidden price reduction if the information is correct –.
Plus 50, minus 50
Apple is said to be planning to start at 1049 US dollars for the iPhone 17 Pro, which is 50 dollars more than the current lowest price for the iPhone 16 Pro (999 dollars). For the 1049 dollars, however, there will be 256 GB instead of just 128 GB, which will be removed without replacement in future –, which is already the case with the 16 Pro Max model, which starts at a more sensible 256 GB. If you look at the current price list, you can see that Apple currently charges 1099 dollars for an iPhone 16 Pro with 256 GB. This would make the iPhone 17 Pro with 256 GB even cheaper at 1049 dollars.

Of course, it can be argued that Apple earns more simply because the 128 GB model with its 999 dollar entry price is no longer available. But at least the new pricing would be a small goodie. However, it is unclear whether this will actually happen – Apple could well tighten the price screw. It will become clear at the presentation of the devices, which is likely to take place at the beginning of September, what rates the company will charge.
Two “real” price increases
Where there will be a real price increase according to current knowledge, however, is for the iPhone 17 Pro Max. According to the leaked list, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will cost at least 1249 dollars in future – with 256 GB, which is already the smallest available storage size. For comparison: The iPhone 16 Pro Max is currently being offered with 256 GB for 1199 dollars. This means that the iPhone 17 Pro Max would be 50 dollars pricier by default – without any “compensation” in terms of storage.
The price of the standard iPhone model is said to remain unchanged: iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 will therefore continue to cost at least 799 dollars. However, the 17 Air, which replaces the iPhone 16 Plus, will be re-priced due to the new form factor. Apple reportedly wants at least 949 dollars for the Air with 128 GB –, which would be 50 dollars more than the 16 Plus. The following applies to all prices: As is typical in the US, they do not include sales tax, which can vary from state to state. In Europe, prices are generally higher anyway, and price increases usually have a greater impact.
