From expensive sports car and SUV to small format: Hyundai's upcoming Ioniq 3 could be the next vehicle to receive Apple's long-awaited, deeper iPhone integration CarPlay Ultra. So far, this is only available in very exclusive areas – the current vehicles from Aston Martin. As the British car magazine Top Gear reports, the new Hyundai will be "digital-oriented" and will be able to use Apple's CarPlay Ultra "if the driver so wishes". This means that, among other things, the dashboard can be given a different look, which comes from CarPlay Ultra, and deeper integration of the vehicle control system –, such as the air conditioning –, is also planned.

According to previous information, CarPlay Ultra has so far been met with rejection in the automotive industry. The reason: companies fear that Apple's stronger takeover of the vehicle interface could weaken their own brand. For example, neither Volvo nor its e-sister Polestar nor Mercedes, Audi or Renault want to participate. Apple had once named 14 interested brands, including those that now no longer seem to want to. Porsche is still involved, and Hyundai was also recently mentioned with its Kia and Genesis brands.

In fact, the slow approach is reminiscent of the introduction of CarPlay in 2014, when only individual brands were prepared to implement the technology, and the situation was similar with competitor Android Auto. Meanwhile, it feels like more vehicles come with CarPlay than without, although there are major exceptions such as the e-vehicles from General Motors and the Tesla electric cars. GM wants to set its own accents with its own UI, while Tesla considers the vehicle interface to be its core business.

The Ioniq 3 is designed as a small, affordable electric car for the city. According to Top Gear, the range is up to 590 kilometers, even if only in the more expensive versions (according to WLTP). The car reaches 100 km/h in around 8 seconds, comes with a 400-volt system and charges slightly slower than its siblings Ioniq 5, 6 and 9. It is related to the Kia EV3.

The vehicle is apparently being built in Turkey. The information from Top Gear comes from Hyundai's head of Europe, Xavier Martinet. The Ioniq 3 is due to be launched on the market next year. Prices have not yet been set. The car will be on display at the IAA in Munich, which starts next week.
