Stripless: Charging stand for AirPods Max and other AirPods
Charging the AirPods Max always involves tangled cables. Accessories specialist Zagg now has a solution that can do even more.

Almost all Apple mobile devices can now be charged wirelessly if desired, whether it's an iPhone via MagSafe or AirPods earbuds and Apple Watch via a charging puck. However, the AirPods Max, Apple's expensive over-ear headphones, do not have this function. Although they have been equipped with a USB-C charging function for the first time since last year (instead of the proprietary Lightning connection), Apple has not built in an inductive power supply. Instead, the devices are charged using a cable, the plug of which, if the AirPods Max are in their case, has to be fiddled more or less into the socket. The long-standing Apple accessory supplier Mophie, a subsidiary of Zagg, has now come up with a solution that makes you wonder why it has only just appeared: a charging stand specifically for Apple over-ears that can also supply a second device with power.
Magnetic dongle
The AirPods Max Charging Stand has two silicone inserts into which the ear cups fit perfectly. Instead of working with an extended plug – which would have been easier –, Mophie uses a USB-C dongle that is plugged into the USB-C socket of the AirPods Max to establish the connection.
This is magnetic and ensures that the headphones are always positioned correctly over the charging pins. Judging by the images published by Mophie, the dongle is flat, but its dark color should make it stand out depending on the AirPods Max variant.

Aluminum, but high price
It is useful that the AirPods Max switch to sleep mode as soon as they are put on, so they do not continue to consume power unnecessarily. Sleep mode is also activated when the AirPods Max are placed in their case. In addition to the AirPods Max charging function, the AirPods Max Charging Stand has a second function: there is a Qi-enabled charging mat at the bottom. This can be used to charge regular AirPods earbuds with a wireless charging case at the same time. It initially remained unclear whether there is enough space for other devices, such as cell phones, and whether Apple Watches can also be charged.
Mophie also does not specify whether the AirPods Max Charging Stand comes with its own power supply or requires a USB-C power supply. A cable appears to be included. Mophie wants a lot of money for the AirPods Max Charger: the device made of aluminum and silicone is listed at 139.95 euros. There is currently a 5 euro discount, and you pay nothing for postage to Germany.
