Apple has given its video recording app, Final Cut Camera, a major update. Version 2 is suitable for the new iPhone 17 Pro, among others, but also has improvements for other models. Apple also announced support for Genlock (also via API) and ProRes RAW videos (ditto).

Final Cut Camera is free and is used to import videos from the iPhone directly into Final Cut Pro. Version 2.0 will be released this month and runs on iPhone XS or later and iOS 18.6 or later—although some functions require at least iOS 26. Of course, all hardware features are only available on devices that support them. With iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, ProRes RAW recordings can be made directly in the future.

The format allows for maximum post-processing, as RAW data is recorded directly from the camera sensor. Another new feature is open-gate recording, which means you can always use the full resolution of the camera sensor and not just DCI 4K. This is useful for social media portrait videos, for example, if you have filmed in landscape format. Subsequent stabilization is also easier—according to Apple, all without any loss of quality or performance. ProRes RAW recordings from the iPhone are supported with the updates to Final Cut Pro for Mac 11.2 and Final Cut Pro for iPad 2.3. Apple promises direct adjustments to color temperature and hue. De-mosaic-ing and exposure changes.

Furthermore, recordings with Apple Log 2 on the iPhone 17 Pro are possible; both can be used in ProRes and HEVC. Log 2 LUTs for Final Cut Pro (Mac and iPhone) can then be overlaid. Another new feature is a timecode function with time of day and recording sequence. This can also be set externally, although Apple has not yet provided any further details on supported devices. Finally, the update also works with the 200 mm “telephoto lens” of the iPhone 17 Pro, enabling 4K at 60 fps.

A genlock function is also available for the first time on an iPhone. The Pro models can synchronize recording devices with reference signals for effects such as bullet time. This should enable precise cuts. Additional hardware from Blackmagic Design has already been announced: the ProDock supports the function via Apple's Genlock API.
