Dynamic charging and Qi2.2: What's new in terms of power for the iPhone 17 & Co.
Three out of four new iPhones charge inductively at up to 25 watts. Another new feature is a rather special charger – but not for us.

Apple has made some changes to the power supply of the new iPhone 17 models and the iPhone Air. In future, all devices except one series will charge with Qi2.2 and a maximum of 25 watts inductively – and Apple has invented a new type of power supply that promises dynamic charging performance. However, the latter has one drawback.
MagSafe: What works and what doesn't
It was already possible to charge devices from the iPhone 16 series with a special MagSafe charging puck with up to 25 watts. However, this was proprietary – Apple supplemented it with new models together with the launch of its new smartphones. These come in one-meter and two-meter versions (the Apple Online Store is currently down). The prices are 49 and 59 euros. The main innovation: Qi2.2 is also supported for other devices outside the Apple universe, which in turn provides the aforementioned 25 watts of charging power. Whether there will be a firmware upgrade for the previous version initially remained unclear.

iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will come with Qi2.2 support from the start of sales next week. Owners of iPhone 16 devices, on the other hand, will have to update to iOS 26, which brings the technology to the devices. The iPhone Air is excluded from all of this. For technical reasons, it can only handle a maximum of 20 watts of fast MagSafe charging, as can be seen from the technical specifications. As usual, it requires a suitable power supply – which must always exceed the MagSafe wattage (here: 30 watts or higher). Nevertheless, with 20 watts, 50 percent charging is possible in 30 minutes via Qi2.2 (with a 30-watt power supply unit). This is also possible with a USB-C cable; a 20-watt power supply unit is sufficient here.
Dynamic charging, but not for us
There is also an interesting innovation in the wired charging of the new iPhones. The 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max models can be charged to 50 percent in 20 minutes using a compatible charger. This must have at least 40 watts. Via MagSafe (with the new charging pucks), a 30-watt power supply unit is sufficient for a 50 percent charge in 30 minutes, according to Apple.
A special charger is brand new, but Apple has only launched it on the market in some regions: The so-called 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max, as Apple calls it. The idea behind the device, which costs 39 US dollars (plus sales tax), is that it can offer a peak charging power of 60 watts, but only draws this dynamically (and for a short time, due to the thermal design), i.e. only when really necessary. This has the advantage that the device is somewhat smaller than typical 60-watt chargers. When asked why Apple does not offer an EU version, the company was unable to tell us.
