Delivery with a bug: iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro with a rare camera problem
Under certain circumstances, the camera on the new devices adds strange black areas. An update is expected to be released.

Users who purchase an iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, or iPhone Air starting tomorrow, Friday, may encounter a camera system error under certain circumstances, according to US TV station CNN. The problem causes unsightly black (and, in rare cases, white) areas when taking photos. Fortunately, however, it occurs only rarely and is related to (excessively) strong LED lights in the environment. According to the report, Apple has already been informed and is working on a fix. It is not yet clear when this will be available.
Be careful when taking concert photos
CNN noticed the bug while photographing a rock concert. The band was standing in front of a large LED screen. "About one in ten photos taken with the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro Max showed small black areas, including boxes and parts of white flourishes that appear to originate from the large LED board behind the band." An Apple spokesperson said this could happen "in very rare cases" when an LED light display is "extremely bright" and "shines directly into the camera." However, the company has already "identified" a fix and will roll it out in an "upcoming software update."

LED lights are by no means rare, however. They are found in more and more household lamps and have long been standard in the film and photography industry –, including in particularly bright forms. It is not yet clear whether the problem can also occur in a studio setting. Apple emphasized that the latest keynote was again filmed with an iPhone (presumably 17 Pro).

It is also interesting to note that the bug affects both the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max as well as the Air. The latter comes with a single 48-megapixel camera, which Apple markets as a dual camera because, when downsized to 12 megapixels, it can be used as a kind of pseudo-telephoto lens (2x).
Apple will begin shipping its new iPhones tomorrow, Friday. The pre-order phase began at the end of last week. In addition to the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max and the completely new Air form factor, there is also a less expensive standard model, the iPhone 17. It comes with two cameras.
