Three billion people use Instagram every day
More than three billion people are active on Instagram every day. This makes the app one of the most used in the world.

According to its statements, Instagram has cracked the three billion daily active users mark. By comparison, Tiktok has around half that number worldwide, while X only has millions rather than billions of daily active users. Facebook, also provided by Meta like Instagram, has more than two billion active users per day.
In a video published on the platform, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri says that reels and direct messages (DMs) have played a major role in reaching “this milestone.” Reels are short videos modeled on TikTok. A swipe upwards brings up the following videos in a flash. As usual, the selection is based on a mixture of general interest in content and personal interests. Instagram also shows a lot of videos in the regular feed instead of just photos, as was the case at the beginning of the service.
Reels and DMs rearranged
Mosseri has now announced that the Reels feed can be personalized. This is done by allowing people to indicate whether they want to see more or less content of a similar nature when watching videos. The European Digital Services Act (DSA) also stipulates that online services must offer their users more transparency and control over what they see in their feeds. Meta already offers options to mark posts as "not interesting." For children and young people, parents can even specify individual words for which no content may be displayed.

Instagram is also customizing its home screen. While the button with a plus sign for uploading content is currently located at the bottom center when opening the app, the arrow for direct messages will be placed there in the future. These are currently located at the top right. The plus will move to the top left corner, leaving only the heart for liking posts on the right.
Main competitor Tiktok is also trying to keep users in the service with DMs and voice messages. This was previously rather cumbersome and limited. Photos can now be sent in group chats, just like in a classic messenger. Voice messages are limited to one minute. This is also the case with Instagram. WhatsApp, on the other hand, allows you to send entire, private podcast episodes to friends.
Instagram was last released as an app for the iPad.
