"Vision Air" and "iPhone 20": New screen technology conceivable
Apple is said to be working internally on new screen processes that promise thinner and brighter screens.

Apple could use so-called CoE screens for the first time by 2027. The “color filter on encapsulation” process promises a combination of the light-emitting layer and the RGB color filter, which are currently still installed separately in OLEDs. The combination allows both physically thinner and brighter screens. Apple could use them in the “iPhone 20,” which is planned for the 20th anniversary of the smartphone line the year after next, as well as in a more compact successor model to the Vision Pro (“Vision Air”).
Long development period
According to a report by the electronics trade service ETNews from South Korea, Samsung may be Apple's supplier. Together with LG Display (also South Korea) and BOE (China), the group's display subsidiary has already been supplying Apple with screens for various devices for many years. The new OLEDs are also based on a new Samsung material called M14, which is said to have a higher light yield than previous OLEDs.

ETNews also writes that Samsung will initially use M14 CoE displays in the S26 Ultra, which is planned for 2026. The S26 Pro and S26 Edge models will reportedly retain the older M13 material. CoE is already used by Samsung in foldables—supposedly already since the Fold3 of 2021. However, the transfer to standard smartphones has so far been difficult, apparently due to space constraints. Samsung Display has therefore given itself a time horizon of half a decade for implementation.
First the S26 Ultra, then Apple
An informed person told ETNews that Samsung plans to specifically emphasize the use of CoE in the S26 Ultra to communicate that the technology is available before Apple in its first top-of-the-range devices. It remains to be seen how big the difference is compared to current OLEDs.
The core material, the so-called black Pixel Definition Film (PDL), comes from the supplier Deoksan Neolux, also from South Korea. Apple currently uses displays from Sony in the Vision Pro. It is not yet clear whether CoE will also come from LG and Sony. The “Vision Air” is intended to make the Vision Pro significantly lighter and more portable than the current model. It has not yet been revealed when it will actually be released; it could even be later than 2027.
