POP Phone from Native Union: Hello, hello!

Apple accessory specialist Native Union has launched an unusual product on the market: a headset in the shape of a telephone receiver. The POP Phone offers a USB-C universal connection and is designed to make (at least potentially) more convenient phone calls and voice chats. An “ergonomic design” meets “crystal-clear sound” with “plug and talk” functionality: this means that the headset simply needs to be plugged into the device for it to be recognized and used as a speaker and microphone.

iPhone owners can use the POP Phone from iPhone 15 onwards (plus the entire 16 and 17 series, including Air); Lightning devices are not supported. All USB-C-capable Android devices should also be ready for use. Finally, USB-C laptops of all brands (including MacBooks) and tablets with USB-C, such as the iPad or the Samsung Galaxy Tab S, can also be used. Depending on the device, you have to select in the settings that the POP Phone becomes an input and output device.

The headset weighs 252 grams, so it shouldn't be too light. Otherwise, it has the look of typical headsets from the 1980s in the USA (and earlier). There is also a matching spiral cable for connection. The product is made from recycled TPU, ABS, and polycarbonate. Inside there is a zinc alloy, which is probably also used to ensure that the feel is right.

Native Union produces the POP Phone in a total of eight colors. The colors are alarm red (orange), pine, black, sandstone (a little like ivory), lemon, candy (a light shade of pink), azure (purple), and slate green (a shade of green). Native Union already had the POP Phone in its program in the past but has now brought it back for the company's 15th birthday. The USB-C universal connection is new.

“Its familiar shape makes making calls easy, enjoyable, and human again,” claims the manufacturer about its device. “Technology should serve people, not the other way round.” However, at just under 40 euros plus shipping (currently over 6 euros to Germany), the “hardware” is not quite cheap for a gimmick. Delivery starts immediately.
