The hacking gadget Flipper Zero has made plenty of friends around the world since its debut in 2020. I have also adopted a plastic dolphin and take it out regularly. Its inventor Pavel Zhovner has been working on a successor with the logical name "Flipper One" for several years and has now published a photo of two prototypes on his Telegram channel.

The photo shows two stacked, apparently 3D-printed prototypes of the hacking gadget. They appear more angular than the predecessor, with the eye-catching eyelet in the top right-hand corner of the housing acting as a design element. The USB-C socket can be seen on the right-hand side of the housing, while the 24-pin GPIO (General Purpose Input/Output) and apparently an SMA socket can be found on the side facing the viewer. In addition, a sticker on the device shows a stylized M.2 plug-in card and slot, further confirmation of a rumor that has been circulating for some time.

In the outline of the M.2 card (S3 Key B) there are references to USB 3.0 (the Flipper Zero is capable of USB 2.0) and PCIe 2.1 and if you look closely, you can see an SMA socket at the top. This can apparently be used to connect external antennas. Apparently, Zhovner is currently experimenting with different cover plates for the back of the housing, as this can be seen in the photo (labelled Жопка in Russian). The back of the upper and lower device differs slightly in design; there is a third plate with longer cooling fins on the table. And a Baofeng UV-5R radio.

The corner of a white housing variant can also be seen; it is possible that both colors will be available to buy. The black housing of the Flipper Zero was reserved exclusively for Kickstarter supporters. These are still early design studies, but there may soon be more concrete information – perhaps even a release date?
