Apple's New Vision Pro Suspension: What the "Dual Knit Band" Can Do
Apple has launched a second-generation Vision Pro. This includes a new head strap. Does it help to use the headset for longer?

Along with the announcement of the second-generation Vision Pro, which will be the first to feature an M5 chip, Apple has also introduced a new head strap. The so-called Dual Knit Band is an expansion of the previous Solo Band and will be included as standard with the new headset in the future. The old Dual Loop Band, which was constructed much more simply and was previously supplied in addition to the first Vision Pro, will no longer be included. If you still want it, you will have to purchase it for 115 euros. But what are the advantages of the new Dual Knit Band?
Pressure Relief Top and Bottom
Previously, with the Vision Pro—unless you opted for alternatives from third-party retailers—you had exactly two ways to position the headset on your head. With the Solo Knit Band, which Apple also used in all its marketing materials, it was easy and, at first glance, comfortable: it was slightly padded and also looked quite good. However, this distributed the pressure on the back of the head, which also sometimes led to pressure on the face area (counter-pressure). The alternative was the aforementioned Dual Loop Band with Velcro. While it didn't look as hip as the Solo Band, it distributed the pressure better because it also went over the top of the head. Disadvantage: It has virtually no padding and is also comparatively thin.

Apple is now seeking a combination solution: the Dual Knit Band combines fabric at the top of the head with fabric at the bottom of the head—and consists twice of the same, comfortable material with padding. It is tightened as usual using an adjustment screw, which usually works well in practice; it then tightens or loosens both areas. The weight distribution should therefore be more balanced overall. Interestingly, this type of construction had also occurred to DIY enthusiasts who combined two Solo Bands using via 3D-printed fasteners.
Price and Availability
As mentioned, Apple includes the Dual Knit Band as standard with the second-generation Vision Pro. However, it is also sold separately and fits the first Vision Pro as well. The (already high) price has commendably not been increased: like the Solo variant and the Dual Loop Band, it costs 115 Euros.
Slightly annoying: Buyers must go through a head measurement process using a Face ID-enabled iPhone before they can order, so that they can find the correct variant. This is already known from other Vision Pro accessories, such as the light seal. The new Dual Band is expected to be delivered for the first time in the coming weeks. How much more comfortable it actually is remains to be seen in initial tests.
