"Flight Unlimited": Realistic VR Flight Simulator for Meta Quest Announced

With "Flight Unlimited", a full-fledged flight simulator for Meta Quest headsets is set to be released – a demanding task for a standalone VR headset.

TAS Systems announces “Flight Unlimited,” a VR flight simulator exclusively for Meta Quest that deliberately aims to differentiate itself from the previously more arcade-heavy flight games on the platform. The developer promises a wide selection of aircraft, detailed cockpits, and simulative flight physics. However, “Flight Unlimited” will not reach the depths of Microsoft Flight Simulators.

TAS Systems has currently confirmed ten playable aircraft. Planned models include the Boeing 747, B-2 Spirit, F/A-18 Hornet, C-130 Hercules, Douglas DC-3, and Cessna 172, among others. All aircraft are said to feature 4K cockpits specifically designed for VR. Disappointing for true sim fans: Control is exclusively via the Quest VR controllers. Flight stick support is not planned, but the developers intend to implement hand tracking at a later date.

TAS Systems emphasizes that the flight mechanics are intended to be simulative, including stalls and sluggish maneuvers. However, systems such as VOR navigation, GPS integration, or complex ATC functions are missing. In a Reddit comment, the studio explained that such features could not be implemented due to budget constraints. They simply did not have the resources to develop complete systems for each model. However, basic controls such as throttle, landing gear, and flaps are included.

In contrast to its predecessor, “Flight 74,” which focused on a narrative component, “Flight Unlimited” focuses on a broader simulation experience with multiple aircraft types. Campaign-style missions are announced, but details are still lacking. A free flight mode and various airports are to be included at launch. Since rendering large terrains is likely to strain the processing power of mobile VR headsets, these will be streamed to the headset. “Flight Unlimited” therefore requires a permanent internet connection.

The planned introductory price is 17.99 euros, with the game later to cost the regular price of 27.99 euros. “Flight Unlimited” is exclusively available in the Horizon Store for Meta Quest headsets and is not related to the flight simulation series of the same name from the 1990s.
