Mozilla has expanded the tab groups feature in Firefox with several new features. Since the launch of the feature at the beginning of the year, over 18 million people have used the ability to organize their browser tabs, according to Mozilla, and the latest updates are based on feedback from the Mozilla Connect community.

Starting with Firefox 145, users can preview the content of a tab group by hovering over it with the mouse pointer without having to expand the group. This hover preview shows an overview of all contained tabs. Since Firefox 142, the active tab remains visible even when the corresponding group is collapsed; this is intended to reduce interruptions in the workflow. And since Firefox 143, tabs can be dragged and dropped directly into a collapsed group without having to open it first. All of this simplifies organization and, according to Mozilla, reduces clutter on the screen.

Mozilla is currently collecting feedback on two other functional areas. For saved tab groups, the company wants to understand how users use them compared to traditional bookmarks and what advantages they offer. Mozilla is also interested in the concept of workspaces—the option to separate different contexts through isolated tab groups that remain available within a browser window.

The preview in the tab groups feature is part of the recently released Firefox version 145, which also includes PDF comments and improved fingerprinting protection, among other things. Mozilla accepts feedback on tab groups via the Connect platform.
