Red Bull professional mountain biker Matt Jones jumped with his mountain bike through the laterally open cargo areas of two crossing self-driving Scania trucks. To achieve this, the autonomous trucks reached the same spot at almost the same time so that the mountain biker could jump through them.

To complete the stunt, the two autonomously driving trucks must pass the jump ramp simultaneously so that Jones can jump through the trucks' laterally opened cargo areas. This precision can only be achieved by AI-controlled self-driving trucks that reproducibly reach the take-off point together at the same time, according to Scania Autonomous Solutions. However, the mountain biker only has a narrow time window of about one second before the gap closes for the jump, as the two trucks are in motion. In addition, the mountain biker is also in motion and must hit the jump ramp at the exact time window.

To ensure this, Scania engineers have devised a system that signals to the mountain biker, pulled by a car and brought to takeoff speed, whether the jump is possible or not. The system uses GPS to record the position and speed of the two trucks and transmits them to the mountain biker's towing vehicle. Based on the positions and speeds of the vehicles, the system calculates whether the take-off time window is suitable and the jump is “safely” possible.

This is signaled to the mountain biker via a monitor on the rear of the towing vehicle: Red means the jump is not possible and should be aborted. In yellow status, it is not yet clear. Green signals that the jump can be performed.

Long training sessions and finally several attempts were necessary before Jones could jump through the two trucks. The two autonomous trucks consistently managed to drive past each other in such a way that the two open cargo areas were aligned at the jump ramp. It was more difficult, however, to get the mountain biker to the ramp at the right time window for the take-off.
