Tip: Turn off strange special characters in Apple Pages
If a font does not support connected letter pairs, Pages marks this with an irritating special character. This can be prevented.
When a colleague recently sent me a Pages file for revision, I first reformatted the text into my favorite font, "Calibri." Suddenly, many special characters I had never seen before appeared – like a comma at the top of the line, mainly above the letters c and s. When I reformatted back to the original font, they disappeared again.
You probably have ligatures activated in Pages, a setting that merges two letters into one glyph for typographical reasons.
Depending on the font, these glyphs look better than the two individual letters in succession.

However, some fonts do not support ligatures. Pages marks this with the special character you mentioned. These disappear when you reformat the text into a font that supports ligatures.
Alternatively, you can turn off ligatures by selecting the entire text or a desired passage and then, in the "Format" menu under "Font > Ligatures," unchecking "Do not use."
Alternatively, you can also do this via the "Format" info panel that appears on the right (see screenshot).
