Tip: Save drive icon on Mac via formatting
With a small trick, you can quickly save the individual drive icon to continue using it, for example, after formatting an SSD.
My recently purchased SSD originally featured an artistic icon in macOS. However, after changing the formatting from HFS+ to APFS using Disk Utility, the individual symbol was gone and replaced by a generic one. How can I prevent this in the future?
When you have mounted your new SSD, hard drive, memory card, or USB stick on your Mac, click on it in Finder and select "Get Info" (Cmd + I) from the File menu.
Click on the individual icon in the upper left corner and copy it to the clipboard (Cmd + C).

Now, create a new folder and open its Get Info dialog in the same way. Click on the generic folder icon here and overwrite it with Cmd + V.
Individual icons are parked on an empty folder before formatting, to copy them back afterward. Here in an older version of macOS, but it works the same way in Tahoe.
You can now format the drive and then replace its new (yellow) icon with the one temporarily parked in the empty folder. You can replace another icon in the same way.
