Figma integrates AI image editing tools
Figma is expanding its design platform with AI image editing tools. They isolate and retouch subjects or expand the background directly within the layout.

US company Figma has introduced three new AI-powered image editing tools for its online tool for designing websites and apps. They are available in the Figma Design and Figma Draw apps and are intended to assist designers when working with images directly in the layout.
Image editing without switching tools
Images play a central role in digital design, for example in apps for hotel bookings. Designers have to perform detailed work such as removing elements or adjusting formats in external programs like Adobe Photoshop. The new AI functions are intended to eliminate this detour and map the workflow within Figma.
The tools perform three very specific tasks and are called "Delete Object", "Isolate Object", and "Expand Image". They are intended to eliminate the need to use external image editing software.
Isolating and retouching objects
Subjects or people in a photo can be marked using a lasso tool. They can then either be completely retouched or further processed in isolation without changing the background. For example, color, light, focus, or effects such as blur and shadows can be changed on an object-specific basis.

Expanding images
The "Expand Image" function automatically adjusts backgrounds to a changed aspect ratio. This allows, for example, square images to be expanded for classic banner advertising formats or mobile views without distorting or having to re-crop content.

Toolbar for AI functions
A revised toolbar gathers all image editing functions. It also includes the described "Remove Background" tool. The AI tools are available to users of Figma Design and Figma Draw with AI activated in the Professional, Organization, and Enterprise plans. Further products are expected in 2026.
