AI models: Musk considers cooperation between Apple and Google problematic
The X owner and Tesla CEO has already sued Apple over alleged favoritism of other AI services. Now he has commented on the Google-Apple cooperation.

Elon Musk is no fan of Apple's market power. In the past, he has sharply criticized commissions in the App Store and recently, with his company X, sued the iPhone maker along with OpenAI, alleging illegal favoritism. Now, the Tesla CEO and X owner has also commented on another Apple topic: the newly announced cooperation between Apple and Google regarding artificial intelligence.
Android, Chrome, and Apple AI
Following speculation, Apple officially confirmed this week that it will use Google's Gemini as its foundational model. The plan: Siri and Apple Intelligence will in the future largely be based on the internet giant's technology, with Apple focusing on local instances and Google not wanting to provide data. “Apple Intelligence continues to run on Apple devices and in Private Cloud Compute, adhering to Apple's industry-leading privacy standards,” Apple stated. A multi-year collaboration is planned.

Musk is not happy about this at all. In response to Google's confirmation of the partnership, he wrote on X on Monday that the cooperation represents an “inappropriate concentration of power at Google.” After all, Google already owns Android and the Chrome browser. Musk did not provide any information on whether he or any of his companies might take legal action in response to the news.
Will Apple open up to other chatbots?
With xAI, X also operates its AI foundational model, on which Grok is based, which was recently in the headlines for sexually explicit deepfakes. Apple has likely shown no interest in Grok. The company is currently oscillating between Google and OpenAI. ChatGPT has thus been part of the operating system since the introduction of Apple Intelligence with iOS 18 and can be optionally activated.
Google, in turn, had hoped to appear as an alternative chatbot on iOS with Gemini. This has not happened so far, even though Apple emphasized that it is open to other providers. Instead, Gemini will now be implemented internally. The practical implications of this are still unclear. The long-delayed, context-sensitive Siri is expected first in the spring.
