Nanoleaf Sense+: Switch not compatible with Expo display cases
If you don't want to control the LED display cases from the Canadian-Chinese lighting specialist via app, you cannot use its current remote control.

A company, incompatible hardware: Nanoleaf, a specialist in smart lighting, has admitted that its LED display case series Expo Display Cases, which has been on the market since 2024, is not compatible with its own physical Sense+ switch – and will remain so without a firmware update. While the company is working on it, it cannot provide a timeline for when it will be ready.
Either walk to the device or use the app
If you want to display items the size of a pair of sneakers, figurines, or other objects with attractive lighting, the Expo series is actually the right choice. The easy-to-assemble plastic boxes are equipped with LED lighting that can be controlled via the Nanoleaf app and – currently only in a simplified way – via HomeKit. The Nanoleaf app also allows for color patterns, color animations, and adaptation to room acoustics, and there is a catalog of pre-made designs to choose from. However, the display cases can only be switched on physically, with built-in sensor buttons. Remote control is only possible via the app, even though Nanoleaf is already charging 300 Euros for a pack of four.

The Sense+ switch, which costs 30 Euros, can be registered in the Nanoleaf app, but the connection with an Expo Display Case installation fails immediately. The app then cryptically states that the firmware of the display cases needs to be updated. However, this firmware is not displayed, neither by restarting the app, nor by restarting the display cases, nor by other workarounds. The solution to the puzzle: The firmware simply does not exist yet, even though this cannot be determined from the app.
No timeframe yet
"Currently, the Sense+ Wireless Switch is not yet supported for the Expo Display Case. Compatibility is expected to be available from firmware version 12.x.x. However, there is currently no timeframe for the release of this firmware update," Nanoleaf support stated upon inquiry. This is confusing, as newer products than the LED display cases are already supported, such as the company's floor lamps.
Meanwhile, some users are also having problems registering the Sense+ in HomeKit to use it for controlling Apple Home devices. This is partly not possible from the app, the process aborts and has to be repeated several times. The overall functionality of the Sense+ – including setting the color temperature – is only available via the Nanoleaf app anyway.
