It is expected to be ready in September. Apple is then likely to introduce its first iPhone foldable. The foldable phone with a flexible OLED display is said to be inspired by devices like Samsung's Fold series, but will feature, among other things, a particularly crease-free look when unfolded. A well-known leaker from China has now published some previously unknown details in a post on Weibo. The account named “Instant Digital” has proven to be remarkably accurate in the past – likely due to good contacts in Apple's supply chain.
Button distribution and Touch ID
According to the latest information, Apple is partly basing its foldable on the iPad mini, which seems to serve as a model. Instead of Face ID facial recognition, Apple will use a Touch ID-enabled Sleep/Wake button with a fingerprint sensor. This is said to be located on the right side, as is a camera control button below it. The volume control, however, moves to the top right, as on the iPad mini. (Perspective when unfolded.)

The left side of the device will apparently remain buttonless. The omitted Face ID module allows the Dynamic Island to be shrunk – the camera itself will peek through a round cutout in the display (“punch-hole design”). Apple will house the rear cameras in a camera platform with flash, microphone, and possibly LIDAR, similar to the iPhone Air, writes Instant Digital.
Color selection very simple
However, the camera platform area is said to always be black, and thus possibly colored differently from the casing. Instant Digital claims to have heard that Apple is planning a white casing as a standard variant, but at least one other color is likely being considered.
Apple is said to have moved the main logic board to the right side, thus avoiding cable connections to the left. The iPhone foldable is said to have ample space for the battery – it is the largest in Apple's iPhone history, according to Instant Digital. It is currently reported that Apple will use 5500 mAh – more than in Google foldables, for example.
