No info on updates for paying customers – Photomator still via subscription
Pixelmator Pro has many fans. Those who have bought the app, now owned by Apple, are currently out of luck. There are also questions about Photomator.

Apple does not seem to intend to update Pixelmator Pro outside its expensive subscription package Creator Studio. The popular image editing software was updated to version 4.0 only for customers of the new rental service brought up to date. The paid version, which currently costs almost 60 Euros, remained on the outdated version 3.7.1, which last received an update three months ago. When asked by Mac & i, Apple made no statement on whether the paid version will receive updates or not. It is therefore possible that the situation will not change for now.
Logic and Final Cut were updated
With Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, Apple is pursuing a dual strategy: The company sells both a subscription and a paid version. The latter, as usual, also received an update with the introduction of Creator Studio, but Pixelmator Pro did not. As is being heard, Pixelmator Pro 4.0 for Creator Studio only has two central changes – the new Liquid Glass design and a new warp tool with new mockups – but paid customers will certainly want these too. Whether there will be any further developments for the paid version remains open, as Apple, as mentioned, does not want to comment. The brand-new iPad version of Pixelmator Pro 4.0 is also only available for subscribers – this is unlikely to change.

Apple had previously virtually discontinued the simpler version of Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator Classic. The company continues to sell the compact yet feature-rich tool for just under 10 Euros, but according to its statements, it will no longer provide it with updates. The app has been available for the iPhone since 2014. “It is still a functional app, but it is no longer updated,” Apple stated laconically. Accordingly, the investment would only be worthwhile if one absolutely needs one of the features.
The question of Photomator
Meanwhile, observers were surprised that Apple did not include the second app from its subsidiary Pixelmator Team, Photomator, in the Creative Studio package. The company could have positioned the app as an Aperture successor to compete with Adobe Lightroom. However, this was not done.
The app continues to be sold individually via subscription – for a comparatively steep 9 Euros per month or 35 Euros per year. For comparison: the entire Creator Studio package costs 13 Euros per month or 130 Euros per year. Photomator is still maintained: a maintenance update was released at the end of January.
