Old HomeKit: Over as of today
The time has come: Apple is shutting down its (ancient) smart home framework. Users should have few problems with this – actually.

After various announcements and years of grace period, the time for the so-called old HomeKit architecture ends today: Apple is now forcing the entire user base to upgrade. This has some consequences, but they are mostly not bothersome. Moreover, it can be rightfully claimed that the new architecture is also long outdated again.
It all started at the end of 2022
Apple had already introduced "HomeKit 2" aka new HomeKit architecture, at the end of 2022. At that time, however, there were initially enormous difficulties with the transition. After bug fixes, the system finally appeared with iOS 16.4. Since then, Apple has left it up to its users whether they want to update or not.

Without an update, however, access to one's own home could be blocked or newer devices might no longer function. Security and performance improvements that the “new” architecture contains were then also not implemented. In addition, there was support for further devices such as smart vacuum cleaners and the so-called activity list, which includes alarm notifications, among other things.
Transition largely problem-free
There are few disadvantages to the new HomeKit architecture. For example, the devices must be current enough – but they are. The new HomeKit architecture is rolled out via the Home app and requires at least iOS or iPadOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, tvOS 16.2, or watchOS 9.2. All of these versions are in turn outdated and, importantly, insecure, as they contain unpatched vulnerabilities.
With the new HomeKit architecture, which also aids Matter support, a feature was also dropped: iPads can officially no longer serve as a Home Hub (control center). Previously, this was possible as long as the tablet was powered. Now, the function can only be implemented with HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV. Most recently, the HomePod 2 celebrated its three-year anniversary without an update. The HomePod mini is even older. When Apple will implement a third new HomeKit architecture remains unclear. The current one still has reliability issues and often switches on slower than users would wish.
