Deutsche Telekom is renaming its public cloud platform: Open Telekom Cloud will henceforth be known as T Cloud Public. The new name is intended to make the affiliation with the group's T Cloud family clearer. According to the operator, the platform, launched in 2016, is primarily aimed at regulated industries and currently has more than 4000 business customers.
Lars Neumann, responsible for T Cloud at Deutsche Telekom, justifies the move with fundamental market changes: “Geopolitics, new security requirements, or artificial intelligence are fundamentally changing our world – and thus also the requirements for the digital transformation of companies,” says Neumann. The renaming marks a clear statement on current market developments.
According to the company, nothing will change for existing customers due to the renaming: existing services, SLAs, and contact people remain unchanged. And of course, data will continue to be stored in data centers in Germany and the EU.

Deutsche Telekom is positioning T Cloud Public as a European alternative to US hyperscalers such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. The company emphasizes “European control over data, infrastructure, and operations” – in contrast to US providers, which are subject to the Cloud Act. The platform is based on OpenStack and is therefore intended to offer open standards and high portability in multi-cloud and hybrid cloud scenarios.
Expansion to hyperscaler level planned
Currently, T Cloud Public offers approximately 80 percent of the core functionality of US hyperscalers – including elastic compute, storage, and network services, highly automated self-service, and support for containers, microservices, and cloud-native workloads, according to its statements. By the end of 2026, Deutsche Telekom aims to achieve 100 percent parity.
An overview of the renaming and expansion plans can be found in the announcement by T Cloud Public.
