Apple's second new product of the year after the AirTags 2 could be the first new iPhone of the year: The rumor mill is convinced that Apple will soon launch an iPhone 17e. This would mean the iPhone 16e from spring 2025 would be updated surprisingly quickly. Various hardware aspects have already leaked. The new entry-level smartphone from Apple is therefore not expected to be a big surprise, but solid improvements are apparently planned – including the fixing of an annoying omission.
Price unchanged?
First things first: The price is allegedly not changing. Just like the iPhone 16e, the 17e is said to start at $599 in the US, and in Europe, presumably as before, at 699 Euros. In terms of storage, Apple might take pity and start directly at 256 GB – that would even be a price reduction, which would be surprising given the RAM and flash crisis. Visually, the 17e is said to have more in common with the iPhone 15 (from 2023) than with the iPhone 14, which sets the form factor for the 16e. Because: Allegedly, a Dynamic Island is planned for the first time, and no longer a notch. This would finally give all current iPhones on the market Apple's info bar around the camera.

In terms of processor technology, Apple is likely to rely on relatively current hardware again: Just as the 16e borrowed from the iPhone 16, the 17e is said to dock onto the iPhone 17 in terms of Apple chip – in the form of a variant of the A19, possibly with fewer GPU cores (binning). Whether the display will receive 120 Hertz (ProMotion at Apple) for the first time is unclear, but probably not. On the back of the device, there are allegedly finally MagSafe magnets, which were missing from the 16e.
Camera and modem chip
For the camera of the 17e, Apple is likely to stick with a single rear sensor unit, according to the rumor mill, as before with 48 megapixels. The front will probably remain at 12 megapixels; this sensor will likely not get the new mode for horizontal selfies from the iPhone 17. For RAM, Apple could upgrade to 12 GB, but it's more likely to be 8 GB.
The modem chip will be interesting: The accelerated Apple C1X from the iPhone Air (plus network chip N1) would also be suitable for the 17e. Finally, availability remains: For the 16e, it was ready at the end of February 2025, so Apple could act similarly this year. This means interested parties will have to wait until next week, perhaps until Monday or Tuesday.
