macOS Sound Management: Soundsource 6 Controls App Output
Rogue Amoeba has a new major version of its Soundsource tool ready. It allows you to specifically reroute or refine sounds on the Mac.

If you want to determine how loud a single macOS app should be, you can't do it with built-in tools. There is a volume setting for all applications, plus a separate one for system sounds. The sound utility specialist Rogue Amoeba, known for Audio Hijack, has a solution: The app Soundsource, recently released in version 6, offers much more flexible setting options.
Route sound as desired
After installation, individual volume controls are available in the menu bar for each app that is currently running. But that's not all. There is also a clear menu for all available sources, and you can also perform audio routing. This means, for example, that browser sound can be forwarded to headphones while system sounds continue to be played through the speakers. An equalizer and a boost can be set for each app and output device to enhance the sound. Apple Audio Units are also supported as effects.

With version 6, sounds can also be sent to different devices, such as HomePods in other rooms. Other AirPlay hardware and Sonos devices can also serve as targets. Also new are so-called Quick Configs for setting the configuration with one click. A new “Recent Noise” indicator is still useful for determining which app the sound is currently coming from. For professionals, the support of the RoundTripAAC effect is useful, with which you get a preview of how compressed sound sounds – useful for mastering, for example. The 10-band equalizer comes with a new preamplifier.
Bluetooth output problem fixed
If you use Bluetooth headphones, you can also bypass a standard macOS problem: As soon as they are selected as input, the audio quality is reduced by default. With the “Output Only” function in Soundsource 6, AirPods and the like also sound normal. Rogue Amoeba summarizes further innovations in Soundsource 6 on a dedicated overview page.
The app costs $49 plus sales tax as a license for a single Mac. Owners of the previous version receive an upgrade for $25. A trial version is available for testing.
