ExpressVPN is specifically expanding its service to VR headsets for the first time. The native app “ExpressVPN: VPN Fast & Secure” has recently become available in the Meta Store, compatible with Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest Pro. The apps of comparable services like NordVPN or Surfshark have so far only been installable via sideloading on the Quest; the “SpatialVPN” service from Jarvis Reality is still in early access.

The Quest app is intended to be able to encrypt the entire data traffic of the headset. Users can decide for themselves whether only the browser traffic should be secured or if the entire internet connection of the device is encrypted. A total of servers in 105 countries are available, and the app supports 19 languages, including German. According to the manufacturer, customer support is available around the clock via live chat or email.

The Meta Quest app also relies on the open-source Lightway protocol developed by ExpressVPN. It is designed to offer higher speed, better security, and more reliability than conventional VPN protocols. In the heise download test, ExpressVPN performs as a technically sophisticated all-rounder. The VPN service scores with comprehensive functionality and solid implementation of security features, but at 2.85 euros per month, it is pricier than most competitors.

In addition to the Quest app, ExpressVPN has also updated its browser extension. Users will be able to protect individual tabs specifically in the future to save resources or encrypt the entire traffic of a device without having to open a separate desktop app. The new “Smart Routing” feature also allows assigning different VPN locations to individual websites, and WebRTC leaks should also be a thing of the past in the future.
