Goodbye, Core ML: Apple plans new AI framework
According to a report, Apple will rethink its AI approach for developers. Core ML is followed by "Core AI" – with more modern methods.

The Apple Intelligence improvements planned with iOS 27, macOS 27, and so on, which are supposed to enable a “real” Siri chatbot for the first time thanks to Google Gemini support, also bring innovations on the developer side. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is also retiring its traditional Core ML framework with the introduction of the new operating systems in the fall, which developers can use to access methods from the field of machine learning. It has been retrofitted with more and more Apple Intelligence functions in recent years.
Core AI is hipper than Core ML
The idea is to replace Core ML with something “a little more modern.” This also has to do with marketing aspects: Machine learning (ML) is now considered an almost antiquated term in AI. However, the core functionality of “Core AI” remains unchanged: integrating Apple's AI models, which now partly come from Google, into its programs. Apple tempts with the possibility of getting by without using third-party model providers like OpenAI or Anthropic. iOS, iPadOS, and macOS programs can instead use Apple's own technology, which is currently free at least.

So far, however, usage is still limited, as Apple's models are considered not competitive. For more complex tasks, developers use APIs to access OpenAI, Anthropic, and others. It will be exciting to see if this changes with the new Apple models based on Gemini. Initially, however, Apple only plans to run older Gemini models on its AI servers before the latest models are then delivered from Google's data centers. Since Apple absolutely does not want to hand over user data to Google, this must be done fully encrypted, which the company is likely currently working on internally.
Problems with new Siri
This will not be easy. Recently, new Siri functions were again postponed, which was probably also due to the switch to Gemini base technology. The voice assistant should finally be able to dynamically access existing iPhone content, read the screen, and operate apps.
It has been a year since June that Apple software boss Craig Federighi announced that context-sensitive Siri is “not vaporware.”
