Apple has revealed for the first time details on how the company plans to celebrate its 50th birthday on April 1st. Events are planned across the globe, spread throughout March. The first event already took place at Grand Central Terminal in New York, where Apple operates a store in the train station building.
Surprise concert in the station
At the event, for which Apple cordoned off parts of its Grand Central store, Grammy winner Alicia Keys performed. CEO Tim Cook was also present. There had been no explicit announcement for the event beforehand; it was a surprise concert. It is conceivable that Apple will proceed similarly with its other 50-year events.
In a press release regarding the event, it was only stated that celebrations would take place “throughout the month”: “Each gathering highlights human creativity and ingenuity in action, and showcases the remarkable things people can do when they have the right Apple products in their hands.” Keys had previously had her own mini-documentary created for the Vision Pro, among other things.

Founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ron Wayne
Apple was founded on April 1, 1976. The date explicitly refers to “April Fools' Day” and was chosen due to Steve Wozniak's infamous sense of humor. The hardware expert founded the company together with Steve Jobs and Ron Wayne, who quickly stepped down.
Fittingly for the anniversary, a new, hefty tome on the company's history was also released, written by Silicon Valley journalist David Pogue. According to his own account, he was granted access to the company's archives and was also allowed to conduct extensive interviews with managers and engineers currently employed at Apple, which is very rare for the company.
In the upcoming issue, Mac & i will feature many stories and details about 50 years of Apple, which will also be available to all heise+ users on the anniversary date. Apple does not seem to be planning a computer for the anniversary, the “20th Anniversary Mac“ will likely remain unique.
