Studio Display XDR for Doctors: Apple Gets Approval from US Health Authority
Thanks to appropriate calibration, Apple's new top display can also be used in the medical field. It's even supposed to be a bargain there.

Medical professionals who use Apple technology in their practice can now use the recently released Studio Display XDR professionally in a first market: The screen has now received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in radiology in the United States. This allows the screen to be used for diagnostics. According to Apple's marketing chief Greg Joswiak, macOS 26.4 must be running on the Mac. “This means that radiologists can now use the world's best pro display in the field of general radiology.” He praised it as “fantastic to see this overlap of health and technology.”
DICOM and medical calibration possible
The Studio Display XDR is one of two new displays that Apple introduced in March. While the Studio Display 2026 received only minimal improvements like Thunderbolt 5, the Studio Display XDR comes with up to 2000 nits, 120 Hertz, and 2304 Mini-LEDs as a backlight. These features are also what enable medical use. For example, the DICOM standard for displaying content from imaging procedures is supported, as is calibration with a medical imaging calibrator.

While the Studio Display XDR is not cheap at a minimum of 3399 Euros (without stand and with VESA mount), this price is practically a bargain compared to professional displays for the medical field – especially when considering the 5K resolution and brightness. However, at 27 inches, the screen is relatively small; Apple has discontinued the Pro Display XDR, which was last completely outdated, with its nearly 32 inches without a replacement.
Certification in other regions sought
Apple had previously announced that it was aiming for DICOM capability and medical calibration, and with FDA approval, these are now official. For DICOM, macOS in its current version offers suitable presets that can be selected via system settings. Apple is apparently also preparing for certification in other countries, presumably including Europe. Here too, the company could score points with the screen in the radiology sector.
However, the Studio Display XDR only plays to its strengths with compatible Macs. For example, only Apple Silicon devices are compatible at all; 120 Hertz is only supported by newer Macs or better-equipped machines. M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2, and M3 only display 60 Hertz.
