Insta360, best known for its 360-degree cameras, has now introduced the Snap selfie screen, a smartphone display for photo and video recording. The hardware can be attached to the back of current iPhones (15 to 17), Samsung phones (S21 to S26, Z Fold6, Z Flip7, and S10+), as well as Google Pixel 8 and 9 Pro, plus other phones from Chinese manufacturers. The display weighs under 90 grams and is held magnetically: either via MagSafe, Pixel Snap, or an included magnetic ring. The idea: This allows you to use the rear image sensors, which are higher quality than the selfie cameras, while still seeing yourself.

The screen size is a respectable 3.5 inches (equivalent to the screen diagonal of the first iPhone) with a resolution of 480 by 800 pixels at 60 Hertz, 550 lux, and 267 dpi. There is a variant with just the display and another that includes an additional light. Power and video are connected via USB-C; DP Alt Mode is supported.

A protective cover shields the screen while the smartphone is being transported. The hardware is controlled via a dedicated app, which interestingly can also interpret touch interactions on the Snap selfie screen – practical, as you wouldn't see the front in this operating mode and would have to operate it blindly. For example, there are swipe gestures for applying filters, and you can select the zoom level / the smartphone's used lens.

The light, attached around the display's frame, supports three color temperatures and five brightness levels. Thanks to the USB-C connection, smooth images up to 4K can be transferred, while competing products often use Bluetooth.

Insta360 is already selling the Snap selfie screen via its website, with availability of three to five days. The display costs 95.99 Euros with the light, and 85.99 Euros without. With the light, due to its ring-light-like arrangement, it's worth checking if it causes unsightly reflections for eyeglass wearers.
