The Australian company Blackmagic Design has introduced a new version of its video editing software: DaVinci Resolve 21 has gained a photo editing workspace and places a further focus on artificial intelligence.

Node-based Photo Editing
Arguably the biggest innovation is the introduction of the “Photo Page.” This allows users to edit photos directly in DaVinci Resolve without resorting to external programs. In the photo area, for example, photos can be cropped and colors corrected. The manufacturer relies on node-based editing, which is also used for color-grading videos.
Users should be able to combine complex adjustments via nodes. Changes can be applied to entire image series. The result, applied to a photo album, can be checked via a LightBox view. A function for shooting with a connected Sony or Canon camera is also integrated. The manufacturer has not yet provided any information on support for other cameras, such as Nikon or Fujifilm.

AI Tools for Search and Portrait Editing
A second focus is on AI tools. Blackmagic Design aims to automate or improve typical editing steps with these. AI tools help to quickly search through media content. With “AI IntelliSearch,” media should be searchable by individual people and objects. The results appear as video clips in the Media Pool.
An AI voice generator creates realistic-sounding voices from text or short voice samples. “AI CineFocus” should allow users to set the focus of an image retrospectively and precisely control depth of field and optical effects. “AI Slate ID” automatically recognizes clapperboard information and transfers metadata to speed up the editing process.
A whole range of tools edit faces: The “AI Face Age Transformer” can adjust the age of people in the image, for example, to credibly represent temporal jumps. The “AI Face Reshaper” changes facial features in videos. An AI tool for skin retouching reduces skin imperfections without losing natural skin texture.
