Native apps from Claude, Claude Code, Perplexity, or ChatGPT for Mac have been available for a long time. Google, with Gemini, was missing until now. The internet giant has now changed that: The first native app for the AI system was released on Thursday night. The application runs from macOS 15 alias Sequoia and costs nothing as long as you are content with a free account.

Similar to ChatGPT or Claude, Google is trying with the Gemini app for macOS to achieve deeper integration into the system. The app can be accessed via a keyboard shortcut that is reminiscent of the macOS system search Spotlight: instead of Command + Space, it is Option + Space. A full Gemini window is obtained by additionally pressing the Shift key. The app is also accessible via the Dock and menu bar. Like the competition, screen content and individual windows can be shared so that Gemini can analyze them and offer “contextual help,” according to Google. Generative models for images and video, such as Nano Banana and Veo, are also integrated and are said to be callable “with one click.” Other Google tools like NotebookLM, as well as files, Drive, and photos, are integrated, even if the latter three do not belong to the AI suite.

In contrast to Perplexity Computer and other approaches like OpenClaw, Google has not yet integrated any desktop automations. However, these are planned for the future. “We're building the foundation for a truly personal, proactive, and powerful desktop assistant, with more news to share in the coming months,” the company writes. Existing Gemini accounts from mobile devices can continue to be used.

In addition to the Gemini app for macOS, something is also happening with Google competitor Anthropic regarding Mac AI. They have now given the desktop client of Claude Code new capabilities. It can now display and run sessions in parallel, show terminal windows, interact with different repos, and more.

A YouTube video of the new features initially appears quite chaotic, as many developers work with parallel sessions, but the new functionality is welcome. It should be noted that a sufficiently large Claude package has been subscribed to. The app is also available for Windows and Linux; SSH support has now been added for macOS and Linux.
