Apple's so-called Immersive Videos are known for spectacular shots: for example, going highwire, into the jungle with wild animals, over the rooftops of Paris, or to events of the fun sports and beverage giant Red Bull. However, while attempting to record one of these videos filmed with special cameras, a tragic accident occurred: the pilot crashed in a small aircraft in the Jordanian desert.
Report: Millions for short videos
The incident with the microlight to which a 3D camera was attached occurred back in the summer of 2024, a few months after the Vision Pro had been on the market. The business news agency Bloomberg was able to publish initial information about the accident as part of an investigation by British government agencies.

The victim was Claire Lomas, a British woman with paraplegia who had completed the London Marathon with the help of an exoskeleton. She was also a professionally trained pilot. The video was part of an Apple Immersive Video series called “Adventure.” The idea was to fly the microlight over the Jordanian desert and film 3D nature shots. Lomas had held her flight license for two years and had previously flown microlights. Although the 44-year-old was not killed instantly in the crash, she died several weeks later from her injuries, according to British authorities. According to Bloomberg, Apple had commissioned the British production company Atlantic Studios for “Adventure.” Apple was reportedly willing to spend millions of US dollars per episode, even though the immersive videos are not feature-length, often being 10 to 20 minutes long.
Apple sent safety officer
Neither Apple nor Atlantic Studios wanted to comment on Lomas' accident. Apple did not comment to Bloomberg at all, while Atlantic Studios stated that they could not respond due to the ongoing proceedings. Lomas' family lawyers also did not release any information. However, a hearing by the UK Coroner's Office is scheduled for the coming weeks. It is unclear why it took so long. According to Bloomberg, there was criticism of the production of the “Adventure” series.
Employees complained about long working hours, which they perceived as unsafe. Apple is said to have sent health and safety officers after complaints. Apart from Lomas' accident, there were no other reported incidents. The video from Jordan was intended to show various well-known locations in the country. So far, five episodes of the “Adventure” series have been released.
