Adobe has announced a series of new features for its image editing programs Photoshop and Lightroom. AI-powered tools are intended to help creative professionals get from idea to finished result faster. Among other things, Adobe is integrating Firefly Boards into its image editing, a kind of digital pinboard for AI-generated drafts.
Pinboard for AI drafts: Firefly Boards
With Firefly Boards, Adobe aims to bridge Photoshop to its web app for generative AI. The visual workspace is intended to accelerate idea generation and avoid switching between the Firefly web app and image editing.
The new "Object Rotate" feature is said to be able to tilt, rotate, and rearrange subjects at almost any angle. The tool does not rotate vector objects or 3D models, but actual pixel images, i.e. photos or isolated image elements.
The Adobe AI analyzes the image and estimates its three-dimensional shape. When rotating, it calculates how the object would look from a different perspective. The freed-up area behind the object is also filled in with generative AI. Adobe charges credits for its use.

Cleaning up art: Photoshop cleans up layers
With the new "Layer Cleanup" feature, complex Photoshop files can be organized. The tool renames layers and automatically removes empty layers. In extensive projects, this is intended to make it easier to maintain an overview.
The tool shows a preview of all proposed changes before they are applied. If necessary, individual suggestions can be rejected or the AI-generated names can be manually adjusted before confirmation.

Lightroom: improved search, film templates, and assisted image selection

The Lightroom innovations in the April 2026 update include a new search function that is said to deliver more relevant and accurate results than before. According to Adobe, it recognizes a much wider range of people, animals, objects, places, and styles. If you search for "black and white portrait in candlelight," for example, Lightroom should be able to recognize both the subject and the mood.
Lightroom also offers 25 new film templates that mimic the look of classic analog films. The templates range from vibrant colors to nostalgic black and white looks and are said to be applicable consistently across different images.
The "Assisted Culling" feature helps select the best images from large collections. It automatically groups similar shots and highlights those with the best sharpness and focus. This is intended to help wedding, portrait, and event photographers, for example. Lightroom also supports raw files from the Sony A7V camera.
Firefly Assistant in public testing phase
In parallel, Adobe Firefly's AI assistant has entered the public beta phase. The assistant coordinates the individual work steps in the background, accessing Adobe's professional programs – including Photoshop, Premiere, Firefly, Lightroom, and Express.
