USB-C charging with empty battery: problems with iPhone 17 Pro and Air
Users report that some current iPhones take longer to become usable again after deep discharge. But there are tricks for it.
iPhone with almost empty battery: Problem with deep discharge?

Owners of current iPhones are reporting an annoying problem related to devices that have lost power. According to reports, it happens that one of Apple's mobile phones, when it has shut down due to lack of power, can no longer be revived by plugging in a USB-C cable and power adapter. Instead of displaying the usual “battery empty” symbol (battery with red fill level), the iPhone remains dark. This is said to occur only with such deep discharges and only with the iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and the iPhone Air. There are also individual reports from iPhone 17 owners.
Revival via MagSafe
As 9to5Mac and affected users report in forums and on Reddit, revival via cable apparently does not work at all. “There was no low battery indicator on the screen; the screen just stayed black. It was like the phone was dead,” writes the Apple magazine. Whether this behavior always occurs with deep discharge or only sporadically remains unclear. Since the Air has a comparatively small battery, it is likely to happen more often here.

Fortunately, there is a revival method: all current iPhones have a charging option via induction. Anyone who has a Qi charger or a MagSafe-compatible charging puck should use it. This finally worked for Mayo too: after a good fifteen minutes, the iPhone Air was revived.
Software or Hardware?
It is unclear whether Apple can resolve the problem with a software update or if it is a hardware problem. The latest iOS 26 versions (26.4.1 and 26.4.2) do not fix the error. Users should make sure not to discharge their iPhone so far that it shuts down, which is sometimes unavoidable, especially when on the go. If the battery still has one or two percent charge, it will not go into deep discharge when a USB-C cable and power adapter are connected.
If charging via USB-C fails, you should consider the MagSafe or Qi trick – fortunately, such chargers are offered in more and more restaurants, train stations, and airports. There are also external batteries with MagSafe, such as Apple's own, which is specifically intended for the iPhone Air.
