Formula 1: Apple wants more licenses – new head is Porsche driver
Apple's head of services commented on the iPhone maker's strategy regarding car content. A new detail about John Ternus also emerged.
Formula 1 on Apple TV: Rights currently only for the USA.

Apple actually shines with its eco-image: The company tries to use more and more recycled material in production and wants to decarbonize its entire supply chain soon. However, when it comes to sports entertainment on Apple TV, the focus is currently shifting away from environmental protection: Formula 1, which is not exactly known for being sustainable, is increasingly taking center stage. And it's set to stay that way for a while longer, as Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of services and content, told journalists.
Formula 1 film gets a successor; Apple wants more rights
In an interview with Reuters, Cue hinted that Apple hopes to globally license the racing series one day. Currently, the company has only been able to acquire the Formula 1 rights for the United States, which it bought from Disney subsidiary ESPN for a (very) large sum. In Europe, the racing series is blocked on Apple TV.

Apple's Formula 1 enthusiasm is partly fueled by the success of the film “F1” starring Brad Pitt, which was also a box office hit (200 million US dollars in costs with at least 634 million dollars in revenue). According to the creators, a sequel is currently planned. “I hope and expect that it will happen,” Cue said on the sidelines of the Formula 1 race in Miami last week. For Apple, the USA alone is a huge market for Formula 1. From there, they want to “expand” – provided the racing series cooperates.
New Head John Ternus is a Porsche Driver
Cue also revealed another detail to Reuters that was not previously known: Not only is Tim Cook a Formula 1 fan, but so is his successor as CEO, John Ternus, who starts in September. He drives a Porsche himself and participates in amateur races, said the head of services.
Ternus couldn't make it to the Formula 1 race in Miami only because he was at the Porsche race in Laguna Seca, which took place the same weekend. There, Apple was among others as a vehicle sponsor in a retro look from the eighties. “So rest assured: If anything, he will be at even more races than Tim. He is a huge Formula 1 fan and knows exactly what's going on,” Cue told Reuters.
