After ChatGPT, xAI now also wants to be usable on four wheels: Grok will soon open its Voice Mode to CarPlay.

Elon Musk's AI company xAI is working on a voice assistant for cars – specifically for Apple CarPlay. In the latest iOS version of the Grok app for the iPhone, corresponding hints including placeholders can be found, reports the Apple blog 9to5Mac. It states that Grok Voice, as xAI calls its voice mode, will be available on CarPlay “soon”.
Grok already in Tesla
The AI assistant, which is also part of the short message service X (formerly Twitter), is already available as Voice Mode for Tesla vehicles. Now it is to be made available on other platforms. After installing the iOS app, the icon is already visible under CarPlay. However, clicking on it on the vehicle screen does nothing beyond the mentioned placeholder. Whether xAI can activate the feature server-side or another update of the Grok application would be necessary remains unclear.

With Grok, the third AI assistant would come to CarPlay cars. ChatGPT, which can be controlled by voice, is already available, as is the voice mode of Perplexity. However, Google's Gemini AI is not yet available. A CarPlay application as part of the iOS version of Gemini has not been integrated so far. Users are also still waiting for a CarPlay version of Claude. Apple officially allowed chatbots into cars with iOS 26.4. However, these must always be designed so that they can be operated purely by voice (input as well as output). This is sometimes not very convenient. However, it is helpful that, for example, with ChatGPT in the car, guided dialogues can be read later on the iPhone.
Apple has no chatbot
According to xAI, the Grok app is intended to be a “co-pilot [for] the journey through the universe of knowledge”. The iOS app also contains an image generator, the X version of which has already caused scandals due to sexualized images. Grok was therefore blocked in some countries.
Apple itself has so far nothing to counter ChatGPT, Grok, Perplexity & Co. An improved Siri that can use the user's context knowledge – including real chatbot functionality – is now not expected before iOS 27 in the fall. Google's Gemini serves as the platform, for which Apple is reportedly willing to pay one billion US dollars per year.
