Codex for Mac: OpenAI tests new remote control via ChatGPT iPhone app
Anyone running OpenAI's coding agent on their Mac will soon no longer need a terminal for remote control. The ChatGPT app is getting a feature for this.

Users of Codex will soon be able to control their macOS computer via the ChatGPT app on their iPhone. OpenAI announced a corresponding “Preview” feature on X late last week. It allows selected users to control their computer remotely while on the go, according to the company. Files, apps, and even the browser on the Mac are said to be accessible. In a further step, the function will also be introduced on Windows when the Codex app is running on it; however, OpenAI did not give a specific timeframe. After all, the ChatGPT app on Android is already supposed to be able to remotely control Macs from the outset, provided users approve, it was further stated.
Access to the entire developer machine
According to OpenAI, Codex in the ChatGPT mobile app can start new tasks on the Mac, confirm or reject next steps from the user, and control the output and execution of an app. Codex runs on both desktops and notebooks with macOS, as long as they are connected to the internet and active.

According to OpenAI, Codex is currently used by more than four million users weekly. The company has found out how important regular “check-ins” are for users to keep processes with the coding agent running. This could also avoid unnecessary rework. Codex makes faster progress when the system can be given the right context – and now also on mobile.
Enterprise environments and remote SSH
ChatGPT for mobile devices always has access to the live status of the developer Mac. According to OpenAI, there is clarity about threads, project context, plugins, and permissions. Mobile users are said to be able to control more than just individual tasks, but entire projects. In addition to files, the necessary permissions and credentials are also available. ChatGPT also receives screenshots, terminal outputs, diffs, test results, and approval requests.
OpenAI emphasizes that they have developed a new “Secure Relay Layer” for security, which makes machines addressable “without exposing them to the public internet.” How exactly the technology works has not yet been communicated – approaches like Tailscale are conceivable. In addition to individual dev machines, ChatGPT for mobile devices is also to gain access to enterprise coding environments. Interesting: The preview of the function is also to be available for Free and Go users. However, they only have a small number of coding tokens. Remote SSH is also to be provided.
