Sonos application for Apple devices: Gone once, then back
For a short period at the end of last week, the Sonos app for iPhone and Mac was unavailable. It is still unclear what caused this.

Once again, trouble with the audio specialist Sonos app: Starting Thursday evening, both the macOS and iOS applications for controlling the manufacturer's speakers and headphones were unavailable through the usual distribution channels, the website and iOS App Store. Those who needed the programs at that time to set up their devices were out of luck, but those who had already downloaded the apps could continue to use them. Links to the downloads simply failed, and the app store search could not find the applications.
Sonos Account Also Malfunctioning
The only indication of possible problems, which has since been deleted, was on the Sonos System Status page. However, it only stated that they had identified "a problem" with "Sonos app availability" for iOS and macOS and were working on a solution. "Until the problem is resolved, there may be difficulties downloading or updating the Sonos app from the App Store," the company stated laconically.

Sonos did not provide further details about the specific problem. However, there was a major outage with the Sonos account at the same time, which the manufacturer requires for even simple app functions itself. It is therefore conceivable that Sonos wanted to avoid users encountering login problems by taking down the applications. Apparently, there were no difficulties for users who were already using the app in a logged-in state.
New App Still Unpopular
After several hours of outage, Sonos revived the entries in the App Store, and downloading became possible again. The system status website no longer shows an error, and historical data cannot be retrieved from it. Users are very sensitive to problems with the Sonos application. In 2024, the manufacturer released a completely new application that removed features and was extremely poorly received – the company had to apologize publicly, and the then CEO, Patrick Spence, resigned. In addition, at least 200 employees were laid off.
The app has been gradually improved but remains unpopular. Most recently, last spring, it was reported that Sonos would finally implement lock screen control for the app again. This would involve using Live Activities – a rather complicated method.
