Bare Bones Software has released a major update for BBEdit. Version 16 strengthens the trend of integrating AI functions into the editor – however, in a privacy-friendly way that is not overly intrusive. Many small details have also been revised and improved, from the HTML5 syntax checker and faster SFTP transfers to integrated Git support.
Shortcuts, AI image search, and more
BBEdit is one of the oldest regularly updated Mac tools. The first version was released 34 years ago. Over the years, it has evolved from a "simple" editor into a tool for web designers, planners, and increasingly developers. It offers connections to the most important external platforms, and Bare Bones Software regularly incorporates support for current Apple features.

BBEdit 16 now offers the ability to find text within images directly from the editor. This can be done across numerous files and supports all grep functions. There are new shortcuts, for which BBEdit now uses Apple's App Intents. This makes the familiar text transformations from BBEdit available for custom shortcuts. In the so-called AI Chat Worksheet, you can now stream server results directly. Projects and notebooks offer new color settings.
vi keyboard shortcuts, if desired
If desired, you can now also use vi keyboard shortcuts (via an emulator for navigation and editing). Code improvements are intended to accelerate BBEdit 16 overall. Web projects can be divided into production and test environments. An overview of all new features has been placed in the as usual comprehensive release notes.
BBEdit costs $60 plus sales tax for a new license. Those who purchased the previous version 15 on or after November 1, 2025, will receive the upgrade for free. Otherwise, BBEdit 15 customers pay $30, and users of BBEdit 14.6.9 or earlier pay $40 (also plus sales tax in each case). As usual, all BBEdit features can be tested for 30 days. There is also a "Free" mode with limited functions, which always remains free and is well-suited for basic tasks.
