macOS 27: These names are suitable
On Monday, Apple will also introduce a new macOS at its developer conference. Ahead of time, there are all sorts of ideas about what codename it might carry.

In a few days it will be time: Next Monday (June 8), Apple's developer conference WWDC 2026 starts. Before the event, there are fresh speculations about what codename Apple will give its Mac operating system. For years, this has been a Californian place; macOS 26 was called Tahoe; the predecessor, macOS 15, Sequoia. A look at Apple's recently filed trademark applications shows where the journey could go.
From Big Cats to California
If you remember: In the past, macOS versions always had names of big cats. With macOS 10.9, the naming after Californian places began, starting with the famous surf spot Mavericks. With macOS 26 last fall, the version number was changed, which was controversial at first: Since then, all operating systems (iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS) have the two-digit year of the coming year.

However, the codename, which Apple always mentions, has not changed for macOS. Accordingly, macOS 27 is likely to be named after a Californian place again. Since macOS 27 supposedly brings rather few major innovations and instead focuses more on stabilization, “Emerald” is considered a possibility for the codename. This would stand for Emerald Bay, which is part of Lake Tahoe. Apple had already carried out such selections before, for example with macOS Sierra and macOS High Sierra or macOS Lion and macOS Mountain Lion.
Names that are still available
An alternative designation could also be “Big Bear,” also a lake in California. There was a corresponding filename in an Apple offer. Apple had secured around twenty Californian places as trademarks for computer products over ten years ago. Several of them have already been used; currently still available are, among others, “Skyline,” “Miramar,” “Mammoth,” “Grizzly,” “Diablo,” “Condor” or “Redwood,” as well as “California.”
As mentioned, WWDC starts next Monday. According to current knowledge, the presentation, which Apple is likely to deliver as a video again, will start at 7 p.m. iOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27 are also expected at WWDC.
