New operating systems: Apple promises "significant" acceleration
Not many big new features, but many small optimizations: Apple wants to get more speed out of Macs and iPhones with tricks. This is what's behind it.

When Apple releases its new operating systems iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 this coming fall, there will be primarily product maintenance for users, in addition to Siri AI, which will initially not be available within the EU. According to its statements, the company has tinkered in many areas to achieve better interface consistency and more speed. The stated values are certainly noteworthy, although much will likely depend on the device used.
Optimization pen applied
First, macOS 27, for example, sheds a lot of ballast: routines, APIs, and other Intel code that was intended for x86 Macs can now be omitted; the operating system, codenamed Golden Gate, now only runs on Apple Silicon machines with ARM architecture. Performance improvements in all new operating systems include accelerated AirDrop transfers, faster startup of songs in Apple Music, faster loading of messages in Apple Mail, an end to sluggish HomeKit pairing, and accelerated JavaScript processing in the Safari browser.

Apple claims it will all be up to 80 percent faster. In iPadOS 27, users can close windows faster (closing process accelerated), account creation has become faster in macOS, and data in the Health and Fitness apps is updated faster or workouts are started faster. iOS supports faster execution of Voice Control commands (Voice Control).
Better caching, revised CPU scheduler
On iPhones and iPads, apps are said to start up to 30 percent faster thanks to smarter caching, and photos land in iCloud Photos up to 70 percent faster. For the Files app, Apple promises significantly faster file transfers (including file display) on the iPhone, and a revised CPU scheduler is said to prioritize important jobs. Depending on the device, Wi-Fi connections are also established more quickly, and switching between Wi-Fi and 5G occurs faster, especially if the device has an N1 chip (e.g., iPhone 17).
Conveniently, at least iOS 27 works on all iPhones that already support iOS 26 – including the iPhone 11. As mentioned, Intel machines will be dropped from support on Macs. Apple is currently testing the new operating systems as part of a developer beta; a public preview will follow in July.
