Windows update for iTunes with iPad Pro M4 support and fixes
Apple has updated its music management tool for Windows. It is not only interesting for buyers of new iPads, but also provides more security.

Apple actually wants iPhone, iPad & Co. owners to use the three new apps Apple Music, Apple TV and Apple Devices under Windows from version 10, which are individual programs for content services and device management (the latter via Finder under macOS), just like on the Mac. However, there is still an iTunes version for users who do not like the new programs. Apple has just updated this to version 12.13.2 - and it brings some important new features including security improvements.

iTunes can now also recognize and use the new iPad models Air M2 and Pro M4 that will be launched this week - without an update, the devices cannot be used or can only be used to a limited extent. Furthermore, a fix has been integrated into Apple's media playback system CoreMedia under Windows. The associated bug with the CVE ID 2024-27793 was discovered by Willy R. Vasquez from the University of Texas in Austin. It can lead to unexpected crashes of iTunes as well as - and this is worse - the execution of arbitrary code by attackers, although apparently not with administrator rights.

There do not appear to be any other security-related improvements or other new functions in the update. iTunes is easiest to download and install via the Microsoft Store. Apple Music, Apple TV and Apple Devices are also already available there - whether these have been updated remained unclear at first.
Switching from iTunes to new apps
If you want to switch to the three new programs, you need to download and install them. The music collection is then managed via Apple Music, TV shows including films and TV+ are available in the Apple TV app and Apple Devices manages iPhone and iPad including synchronization.
Confusingly, however, any previously installed iTunes does not disappear. Instead, podcasts and audio books can still be found there, for which Apple does not yet have its own applications under Windows, as is the case with the Mac, iPhone or iPad. Apple only officially completed the beta phase of its three new apps this spring, heralding the end of iTunes. It will no longer be available on the Mac in 2019.
