Ubiquiti Networks wants to increase the security of its user accounts and is enforcing the use of two-factor authentication (2FA) from July. Owners of devices – marketed under the brand name "Unifi" – will now receive a monthly request to add a second security factor.
Unifi is an ecosystem of network components such as routers, switches and Wi-Fi access points, as well as surveillance cameras and smart doorbells. The technology zoo is managed using web-based administration interfaces. To access these, Ubiquiti customers must create an account that is managed centrally by the manufacturer.

Anyone who wants to continue to have access to their Unifi account after July 22 of this year should act now. In addition to the official app called "UI Verify", administrators can also generate one-time codes using the TOTP method, as supported by the Google Authenticator and the Bitwarden app. Email is also supported and – if users let the deadline pass – is selected as the default method.

Ubiquiti hit the headlines a few weeks ago because the Russian Secret Service GRU operated a botnet for cyber espionage on devices taken over from the network equipment supplier.
