Apple's anticipated AI initiative is said to include a major overhaul of the increasingly outdated Siri: voice models are to make the assistance system integrated into iOS & Co more flexible and powerful, as Bloomberg reports, citing informed sources. The aim is to be able to control many more functions in the operating systems and individual apps. According to the report, this includes opening certain documents, sorting notes into a folder, calling up a summary or sharing content.
AI Siri probably not until 2025
AI analyzes what users do on their iPhone and then automatically allows Siri to control these functions, the report continues. Initially, several hundred different commands will be supported, albeit limited to Apple's own apps. However, Apple will not be introducing this extended version of Siri with the first final version of iOS 18 in the fall, but is not expected to deliver it until 2025. Initially, Siri will only be able to understand individual commands, but combinations of commands will also be possible at a later date. It remains unclear at this time when Apple will open up such a system for third-party apps.

Apple's head of software has asked his teams to integrate as many AI functions as possible into the next operating systems. In addition to iOS 18, Apple will also be presenting iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 at WWDC in the near future. The operating systems should therefore automatically decide whether a called AI function is executed locally on the device or in the cloud. However, many of the local AI capabilities require the latest hardware such as the iPhone 15 Pro or an M-Chip in Macs and iPads, Bloomberg notes.
Apple's mixed approach: AI probably partly local, partly in the cloud
To protect user data in the cloud as well, Apple is relying on in-house chips with a virtual black box in its data centers, according to recent reports. At the same time, Apple has reportedly signed a deal with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT and other technology from the AI company into iOS. Where and how this data will be processed remains open for now. Talks with Google about the use of Gemini are still ongoing, according to Bloomberg.
